Colour

The deep purple of the 2014 Sgarzon occupies almost the entire visual space and extends to the edge of the glass.

Aroma

You could almost say that this wine has both wild and earthy attributes. It is almost as if the Sgarzon needs an extra breath of the air to develop its full appeal. After opening the bottle and breathing for two days, it reveals its true nature. Its berry essence has a robust and masculine astringency, reminiscent of sloe, rowan and elder wood. The bouquet is further accentuated by an earthy minerality that blends harmoniously into the aromatic spectrum. There is a certain satisfaction in slowly and patiently approaching the Sgarzon sensorially.

Taste

On the palate, the 2014 Sgarzon is challenging and youthful, carried by the youthful acidity and tannin structure. The dark fruit blends seamlessly with the earthy undertones perceived from the bouquet, and transitions into a long mineral finish. Like its Morei colleague, it is a pleasure to taste it over several days and observe its various stages. A wine with promising ageing potential.

Recommendation

To enjoy this wine already now, I strongly recommend decanting it and serving it in a sufficiently large glass.

Alternative food recommendations

A creamy brie on grilled green asparagus garnished with fresh figs and caramelised pecans would be a fitting delicacy. A beetroot risotto with smoked trout would harmonise equally well. Or try a warm-smoked prime rib served with braised red peppers and rosemary.
