  • 👃 Aroma: Fresh green apple and pear notes, quince, white peach, complemented by fine herbal spice and a characteristic slate mineral note
  • 👅 Palate: Dry and taut with lively acidity, creamy texture, notes of citrus fruits and ripe stone fruits, long mineral finish with fine salinity
  • 🎭 Character: Precise, tension-filled white wine with Burgundian depth – the combination of freshness, minerality and complexity makes it a classic Loire Chenin with considerable ageing potential

Wine description for Saumur blanc AOC 2023 1500ml Magnum by Guiberteau

Character
A wine that lives from precision and depth. Romain Guiberteau is among the quiet greats of the Loire – a winemaker who convinces not through loudness, but through exactitude. His Saumur blancs are an expression of a profound understanding of place and variety, characterised by mineral tension and an elegance that requires time to fully unfold. The magnum bottle is no accident: the larger volume protects the wine, slows its maturation and allows it to gain in complexity over the years.
Terroir & Origin
Saumur lies in the heart of the middle Loire, where tuffeau – the so-called tuffeau – shapes both the landscape and the wine’s character equally. This pale, porous limestone retains moisture, regulates soil temperature and gives the wines a distinctive chalky minerality. Guiberteau’s vineyards lie on these ancient tuffeau soils, deeply rooted in a landscape that has produced Chenin Blanc for centuries. The vintage 2023 brought warm, dry conditions to the Loire – wines of ripe fruit, yet with cool night temperatures preserving freshness and acidity structure in the hands of artisanal winemakers.
Grape variety & Vinification
Chenin Blanc is the soul of the Loire – a grape variety of rare versatility and longevity. In Guiberteau’s hands it is made dry, with a minimalist approach in the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, gentle ageing, no excess of technical intervention. The result is a wine that lets the terroir speak. With 12.5% alcohol it remains lean and purposeful – not a wine that seeks to impress, but one that moves.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The lively acidity and mineral texture make this wine an ideal companion for crayfish and crayfish butter, grilled pike-perch or Loire Valley goat’s cheese. It also reveals its full strength alongside calf’s sweetbread, white asparagus with hollandaise sauce or a simple roasted chicken. The magnum bottle invites you to open it at a long table with good friends – and to let it wait a few more years whilst doing so.
