Wine information

The fruit of this special cuvée comes only partly from Marguet's own vineyards, but mainly from those of his colleagues who work consistently biodynamically. The Chardonnay comes from Léclapart, the Pinot Meunier from Laval and the Pinot Noir from Lahaye. The vinification Sapience by Benoît Marguet and Hervé Jestin, probably the most sought-after advisor on biodynamic farming in Champagne.

Nose

The 2009 Sapience shows the slightly oxidative style of the house of Marguet in combination with a fantastic richness and depth of aromas. First on the Prowein presented where it was still almost buttoned up, it is now open, sublime and elegant in August. The finest fresh Piedmont hazelnuts combine with notes of marzipan, cinnamon blossom and just-baked fior di mandorla, where a light juiciness of baked goods meets citrus zest notes, vanilla and almonds. It's quite wonderfully appealing.

Palate

As with the previous vintages, the 2009 Sapience the pure energy on the palate. At the same time, the maturity to the point and the silky elegance are immediately noticeable. Together, of course, this is an inspiring triad of this still so young champagne. The Sapience is almost beguilingly perfumed and evokes fresh baked goods with a slight sweetness, butter fudge and lemon curd, but above all red and dark berries, with which the baked goods, reminiscent of brioche, seem to be coated. At 2009 Sapience the red varieties, which together make up 50 %, seem to be somewhat more prominent than in the 2008 vintage. As you would expect from such a prestige champagne, the deep red and yellow fruit as well as the citric acidity combine with stony mineral components to form an impressively dense and complex composition in which iodine notes, stone interspersed with iron and, with air, more and more herbaceous and spicy notes play a role, mutually reinforcing each other and reverberating for minutes.
