RT Alte Reben 2013

The name RT stands for Roter Tement and marks a certain speciality in the predominantly white-dominated Styria. This vintage's cuvée of Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon consists largely of Zweigelt and comes from vines that are about 35 years old, with the Cabernet coming from Rossberg and the Zweigelt from Wielitschberg. The grapes were selectively harvested by hand, followed by a maceration period of four weeks. It was then pressed and matured in barrels for five years.

The 2013 RT Alte Reben from Weingut Tement radiates full maturity and hedonistic fruit from the goblet. Fully ripe black cherries, plums and blackberries fill the fruit basket and are subtly underpinned by fully ripe pyrazine reminiscent of piment d'Espelette. In addition, there are aromas of dark tobacco, dried mulberries, dark chocolate and plum jam along with mild spices such as black pepper, cardamom and allspice.  

At first, the RT Alte Reben is super juicy and shines with enormous discipline on the palate. Tightly parted with a tailored and starched doublet, everything is in the right place Despite its expansive fruit, it is taut on the palate with a cool structure and pronounced, compact tannins, enormously polished thanks to its long ageing in wood. They make the wine seem downright refreshing, stimulating with deep fruit and driving acidity that makes you want to drink yourself thirsty.
