At an altitude of 450 m, this 90-year-old vineyard on a steep limestone slope produces compact, dense and balanced wines thanks to its low yield. Although Saint-Romain does not yet have any 1er Cru vineyards, Combe Bazin is one of the top vineyards in the commune. The yield in 2019 was a modest 28hl/ha.
The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by whole bunch pressing without prior crushing and two days of sedimentation in a concrete vat. Then the fermenting must is pumped into French oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine matures in barrel for 18 months and is assembled in steel one month before bottling. A small amount of SO2 is added before bottling.
Color
Straw yellow with bright reflections.
Nose
The 2018 Saint Romain "Combe Bazin" from Domaine Rougeot Pére & Fils is multilayered and complex on the palate. Citrus and vegetal notes of lemon leaves and lemon balm outline the top notes, the fruit is sparse and skeletal, saline and vegetal notes predominate. Added to this are lush aromas of melted butter on toasted toast and young hazelnuts.
Mouth
Focused and taut with concentrated extract and a long, taut acidic arc, it whips across the palate of the taster. With a fine piquancy, it combines the coolness of its location with the maturity of the vintage to create a perfectly trained, athletic type reminiscent of Iggy Pop or Mick Jagger. With fine tannin and filigree fruit in the salty, tart finish, it offers one addition after another in the long finish.
