The Sous la Velle is a completely flat vineyard and is composed of six plots in the eponymous site. Three of them are located at the foot of the Meursault hill, opposite the Chateau de Meursault. The soils there are somewhat richer and less chalky, so the grapes ripen a little later here than in the rest of the commune. They produce wines of classic expression with ripe yellow fruit. Three other plots are located on the Puligny-Montrachet side. The wines here turn out less fruity and are always fresher with a little more acidity. The vines are 45 to 65 years old and produce accessible and generous Meursaults with lively tension and vibration early on.

The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by whole bunch pressing without prior crushing and two days of sedimentation in concrete. Then the fermenting must is pumped into French oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in barrel for 18 months, assembled in steel one month before bottling and a small amount of SO2 is added.

Color

Bright straw yellow.

Nose

The 2019 Meursault Sous la Velle from Domaine Rougeot Pére & Fils is rich and fruity. Ripe white peach, orange blossom oil and quince outline its richly filled fruit basket, underpinned by oven-fresh biscuit and lightly toasted toast. With white flowers in the top note and nutty notes in the base note, it plays the entire keyboard of a youthful, open-hearted Chardonnay with a clear character of origin.

Mouth

On the nose, the expansive juicy fruit of peach and quince mixes with toasty, spicy aromas of toast, nut and sourdough bread. With a creamy texture and viscous feel, it is carried by its clear-as-a-bell arc of acidity that stretches across the palate from the initial drink to the finish, allowing it to shine despite its generous character. A wine for the courageously seasoned kitchen.
