The Azienda Agricola Valfaccenda was founded in 2010 by Luca Faccenda and his partner Carolina Roggera in Canale. On the steep and sandy hills of the Roero, Luca and Carolina exclusively cultivate the autochthonous Nebbiolo and Arneis grape varieties - in the firm knowledge that only grape varieties with native roots are able to authentically reflect their origin in the bottle. The two hectares owned by the estate are located around the winery near Canale, further areas on the hills Le Rocche, the landmark of the Roero, as well as in Vezza, Madonnna di Loreto in Canale, and San Grato in Santo Stefano are cultivated in lease. The soils of Roero are made up of sand, which in ancient times formed the seabed of the Gulf of Padania, sometimes mixed with clay sediments. In 2014, Luca Faccenda registered the farm for organic certification to allow his vines the best conditions for the authentic expression of Roero.
Valmaggiore is a cuvée from the three vineyards Mompellini, Loreto and San Grato in the municipalities of Canale and Santo Stefano. The young and old vines grow on sandy soils with varying degrees of clay with southwestern, western and eastern exposure. The grapes are harvested at their best ripeness according to the vintage, the vine and the location, and fermented separately. After the obligatory ageing in barrels, the wine is bottled during the waning autumn moon in the year following the harvest. After further aging in the bottle for almost a year, the wine is put on sale.
Color
Ruby red with a bright edge and brilliant reflections.
Nose
The nose delivers what the Nebbiolo promises The 2017 Valmaggiore from Valfaccenda opens with fine ethereal spice of sandalwood and mild spices, before more spices like black pepper and cloves join the round. The joyful fruit chats open-heartedly and light-heartedly of cherries, currants and blackberries and shows its sociable side.
Mouth
The 2017 Valmaggiore from Valfaccenda turns everything that Nebbiolo skeptics usually say against it not only into a positive, but directly into pure hedonism. Its tannins are present, gripping and self-confident, yet ripe and with a wonderful bite that makes the wine not only drinkable, but also chewable. The fruit is expansive, forthcoming and balanced between warm richness and youthful juiciness, further fueled by the ripe and squeaky acid arc. Some violets and liquorice underline the character of the grape variety, which simply makes you smile when drinking it and proves even to stubborn doubters that this Nebbiolo has an immensely high fun factor.
