Tasting note from dated 04.10.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet met at the agricultural college in Perpignan, but went their separate ways at first. In 2003, they borrowed money from friends and set up their own business. The name-giving area around the winery was actually called Roc Blanc, named after a white quartz vein protruding from the black slate. However, Marjorie decided to rename it Roc des Anges Engelsfelsen. In the meantime, the winery is one of the top addresses in the region and comprises 30 hectares of vines on a mosaic of different soils.

The Llum is a cuvée of young and old vines of Grenache Gris and Macbeu, planted between 1919 and 2008. Grown on very poor slate soils without clay content, they give the wine its typical crystalline and mineral character.

Color

Pale straw yellow with a silver tapered rim.

Nose

On the nose, the Llum is always timid, almost taciturn, and can only be deciphered between the lines without false arrogance. Everything it currently offers serves only as a placeholder for its potential and further development. The Macabeu already reserves the olfactory sunbed with its towel, but without appearing at the pool, and the Grenache Gris is also currently only announced by a few personal objects at the place. Nevertheless, everything seems to be in the right place here, just before things really get going. The salty scent of the nearby sea wafts over everything.

Mouth

The 2020 Llum from Roc des Anges is currently only a sketch of a wine that will soon blossom into its full size. Firm and closed on the palate with high vibration and tension on the palate, it seems like a monolith whose contours are yet to be revealed. The acidity is elegantly interwoven, aromatically it is rather taciturn with some liquorice next to the clearly saline character. A wine that will reward us richly in just a few months.
