Tasting note from from 13.08.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet met at the agricultural college in Perpignan, but initially went their separate ways. It was their shared passion for horses and later wine that brought them together again. At that time, Stéphane worked on a larger farm in Maury, while Marjorie gained her first practical experience in biodynamics in Calce near Gauby. In 2003 she borrowed money from friends and started her own business. The site was actually called Roc Blanc, named after a white quartz vein protruding from the black slate. However, Marjorie decided to rename it Roc des Anges. In the meantime, the winery is one of the top addresses in the region and comprises 30 hectares of vines on a mosaic of different soils.

The single vineyard Chamane was planted in 1960 and is exclusively planted with Muscat a Petit Grains. It was bought in 2010, the original aim at the time being to pull out the vines and replant them, as neither Marjorie nor Stéphane are big fans of the variety. However, the first test vintage converted them, as the variety's ability to reflect its origin from the slate was simply underestimated and the expansive aromatics of the Muscat subordinate themselves willingly to the terroir.

Color

Straw yellow with bright reflections.

Nose

On the nose, the 2020 Chamane from Roc des Anges is initially restrained, instead of going all out with its typical grape variety. Wet stone and light spicy notes of nutmeg blossom and white pepper are subtly underpinned by citrus notes of pomelo and clear apples. The stony and salty notes dominate and seem to move the wine olfactorically towards a sculpture with their edges and corners.

Mouth

On the nose, Chamane is clear as a bell with an almost cloudy appearance and a polished body that seems to float above the ultra-stony slate minerality like a zeppelin. You have to have licked warm wet slate to be able to place this feel. Killer minerality with ascetically reduced fruit flows into the existentialist finale. A spectacular sculpture for hardened terroirrists!
