Tasting note from from 31.08.2020, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser
The historic site Am Schwarzen Herrgott is the aromatically darkest wine in the triad of Battenfeld's GGs. It is one of the oldest sites in the country mentioned in documents and is situated at 170-250m above sea level at the beginning of the Zellertal basin. It has a slope of around 40% and is underpinned by solid clakestone bedrock and is essentially characterised by its microclimatic conditions. Situated on a steep fault edge it is sheltered not only from excessive light but also partly from rain. The border to the northern Palatinate runs right through the middle of it. The wines of the Schwarzer Herrgott are fermented spontaneously by hand after strict selection and aged in wooden barrels.

Color

Bright straw yellow with silver rim and brilliant reflections.

Nose

The 2019 Am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling Großes Gewächs from Battenfeld Spanier always has the darkest aromatics in the triad of Wonnegau GGs from Battenfeld's forge. From dark fruit to dark spices to a slightly smoky top note, it is always closed in its youth and therefore absolutely requires the decanter. Decanted upside down with caracho, it needs at least three hours at this stage to get into a chatty mood. Dark-fruited and tartly contoured with aromas of cocoa nibs and dark berry fruit, this enormously terroir-driven wine shows up with slightly smoky notes of tobacco, violet flowers, green mandarin oranges, and cassis and blackberry leaves on the nose. A challenging and idiosyncratic wine in a class of its own.

Mouth

With a creamy texture, it's taut on the nose with equally dark aromatics on the palate. Spanier's motto Liquid Earth is here haptically perfectly translated to the bottle, the perfectly integrated vibrating acidity interweaves it with dark pulsating bass as in Massive Attacks's Karmakoma. Aromatically tart, structurally taut and uncompromisingly straightforward, its purist style symbolizes the essence of Zellertal, the Black Lord God. Dark fruity with chalky minerality, epochal length and cathedral finish with cool reverberation.
