We are here to the north of Riquewihr, where an exceptional vineyard rises on the south and south-east slopes of the hilly Schoenenbourg. Between 265 and 380 metres in altitude, this magnificent vineyard site is full of aromas and character. The site covers an impressive 53.4 hectares, characterised by a watery subsoil consisting of a varied mixture of Keuper, marl, dolomite and gypsum. Rich in humus and covered by fine layers of Quaternary gravel, Vosges sandstone and shell limestone, as well as marl limestone, the soil provides a wonderful foundation.

One of the stars of this region is the 2017 Schoenenbourg Riesling Grand Cru, which impresses with its light golden yellow colour. The first impression is classically elegant, mineral - a welcome that expands as the wine receives oxygen. Alongside the stony notes and a hint of ripeness, nuances of apple peel and citronate become apparent. With longer exposure, the Riesling reveals notes of vineyard peach, apple compote, fragrant flowers and a hint of honey that characterise its seductive fragrance.

A supple, juicy taste greets the palate, with youthful fruit coated in fine sugar and balanced by minerality and subtle tannins. It could be described as a wine still in its early years, but with great potential for development and maturity. For those who cannot wait, it is worthwhile to aerate the wine sufficiently and then enjoy it with dishes with fruity and spicy accents. Those who are more patient could try the 2016 vintage and keep the 2017 to mature.

Alternative combinations are offered as gastronomic accompaniments: an exquisite Brussels sprout curry with coconut notes, a salmon steak with a crust of almonds and a spicy lemon sauce, or fine clams served with a butter refined by vanilla and orange. These suggestions show off the diversity and charm of the 2017 Schoenenbourg Riesling Grand Cru to its best advantage.
