The Schlossberg is the oldest Grand Cru vineyard in Alsace. Located at an altitude of 230 to 400 meters above sea level, the soils of the Schlossberg vary enormously in terms of their support. The base is solid granite rock, the soils are partly brown, slightly acidic, gravelly and of very good mineral fertility. They are permeable and warm up very quickly. On the upper slope the overburden is less, on the lower slope the soils are more luxuriant and produce richer wines. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Schlossberg ensure optimal exposure to sunlight and, thanks to their steep inclination, call for terraced viticulture. The grapes for the Cuvée Sainte Catherine come from 40-60 year old vines from the medium slopes of the Schlossberg.
The grapes from the best plots of the Grand Cru site are harvested by hand, followed by the gentle pressing of the whole grapes in pneumatic presses with subsequent spontaneous fermentation with their own yeasts in large old wooden barrels. The aging on the lees gives the wines substance and their special longevity.
The cuvée names of the Domaine go back to the members of the family Théo, Colette, Laurence and Sainte Catherine.
Color
Brilliant straw yellow, bright and clear.
Nose
The 2019 Schlossberg Riesling Grand Cru Cuvée Sainte Catherine from Domaine Weinbach opens with rich yellow fruit of quince, yellow apple and pear. The opulent, ripe nose is complemented by spicy and citrus aromas of orange zest, fenugreek and light honey convey depth, while lemon zest and the impression of wet stones suggest freshness. In sum, the nose is crystal clear and allows for a flawless and unobstructed view of this particular parcel in Schlossberg.
Mouth
Powerful and dense, the Cuvée Sainte Catherine is nothing but a stunner, but not necessarily bolid. The wine expands visibly in the glass, smoky notes come to the yellow fruits, which are complemented by spicy aromas such as curry leaves, ginger and turmeric as well as candied lemon peel and orange marmalade on salt-buttered toast. A great wine with immense intensity that proves one thing above all else Top wine always tastes great, whether young and closed, after three days in the carafe or ten years in the bottle. When therefore remains a question of patience and the number of bottles stored.
