The Trapet family has been making wine in Gevrey-Chambertin for six generations. Jean-Louis Trapet took over the reins of the estate from his father in 1992 and took it to new heights in terms of quality. In order to achieve the greatest possible expression of the origin, the yields were reduced and the cultivation was changed. Since 1997, Trapet has been cultivating vines on 14 hectares according to biodynamic guidelines, and in the cellar, too, fining and filtration are renounced. The domaine owns vineyards in the best Grand and Premier Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin.

When Jean-Louis and Andrée, who was born in Alsace, got married, the Alsace vineyards and the branch in Riquewihr were part of the marriage. As Andrée is a winemaker's daughter who is also attached to the soil of her home country, there was no either-or, but only a both-and. Thus, the Domaine Trapet was created out of the Domaine of Jean-Pierre and Hélène Graye and since then offers the Trapets the rare possibility to work with two different historical terroirs. The areas are also cultivated according to biodynamic guidelines.

Situated to the north of Riquewihr, the Schlossberg ranges in altitude from 230 to 350 m and is located in the commune of Kientzheim. The Kaysersberg part consists of greywacke sandstone and Devonian schist, which is interrupted in the north-eastern part by the intrusive granite of Thannenkirch. Due to its steep location, the Schlossberg is cultivated in terraces and comprises a good 80 hectares of vineyards, the majority of which are Riesling.

Nose

On the nose, the 2018 Schlossberg Riesling Grand Cru from Domaine Trapet is expansive and generous. Aromas of ripe stone fruit such as yellow apples mingle with fresh citrus notes of orange zest and green tangerine. Garnished with the scent of a freshly mown summer meadow, a spoonful of robinia honey and a bouquet of white flowers, it is mineral-primed with notes of wet pebbles. Complex and multi-layered, it demands the carafe with a firm voice when young, and upside down!

Mouth

The Schlossberg is also expansive, generous and enormously powerful on the palate. Since it always needs a few years of bottle ripeness to fully play out its assets, it therefore shows itself firm and closed in the youth. The palate pulsates with complexity, the acidity elegantly woven into the overall texture of the wine. The fine phenolic contours it razor-sharp and is supported by profound minerality, which accompanies him into the long, salty finish.
