Color
In bright golden yellow the wine shows itself clear and shiny in the glass.
Nose
Proud throughout, this Alsace Grand Cru is initially restrained, asking for patience and/or a decanter to reveal itself fully. With a base of green apple and a twist of lemon zest, Schlossberg is less about opulence and more about precision, quiet tones and herbal spice. Lemon balm and vervain, as well as lemongrass and turmeric, merrily meet the flowers of nasturtium and the aromas of freshly mown meadow. All this underpinned by stony accessories.
Palate
The Schlossberg site allows its Rieslings to appear fruity, playful and accessible; however, it takes time and patience for this. This is also the case with this 2017 Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru. Paired with stringency and Albert Mann's signature, which is reduced to the essential, this wine lives from immense juiciness. It gains tension from the clearly defined, well-trained body of a long-distance runner and the crisp acidity of a fruit salad that has just been drizzled with lemon juice. With compact body and persistent length, this is simply great Alsace.
