Nose

Those who think of Moselle, Saar and Ruwer cabinets when they think of auction wines are almost always right. But also Rhine-Hessian Kabinets sometimes come under the hammer. This Pettenthal Cabinet from Kai Schätzel is, of course, fundamentally different from the Moselans in terms of aroma alone, and frankly from anything else you'll find in Kabinett on the Rhine front. The aroma is distinctive and unique with clear apple and apple cider, with citrus, some flint and a hint of petrol, wet rock flour and yeast.

Mouth

What is a trademark for Schätzel's wines is shown in all its depth in the auction wine. This wine is not a wine to sniff, but a structure and texture wine of great clarity and precision. The Pettenthal Cabinet creates a balance of playful lightness and great seriousness. It is punchy and juicy, ostensibly bright in its pome fruit and citrus nuances, but then dark and mysterious again in its earthy minerality. The acidity is fine and balances the sweetness, the wine is elegant, refined and has a typically saline note that, along with the lively acidity, evokes a sense of minerality. It is still very young and actually designed to disappear in the cellar for a few years.
