Nose
Kai Schätzel also pulls off his racy mineral and uncompromising style to the hilt with the selections, and that is good and has made him so successful and above all unmistakable. Thus, already in the fragrance of the 2015s Pettenthal Selection clear that this is a very tightly knit Auslese, which will not explode in the fragrance but on the palate, and that too not primarily with the fruit but with other characteristics. Accordingly, there is a clear orientation to herbaceous-vegetable aromas, to stone, smoke, some fresh biscuit dough and a rounding off with discreet apple, lemons and nectarines.
Mouth
On the palate, the sweetness comes through - after all, it is an Auslese! But with Kai Schätzel, this sweetness and also the concentrated juicy fruit is in turn combined with piquant, almost cool-looking stony and herbaceous aspects as well as a slightly salty and penetrating acidity, which despite all the sweetness brings a lot of pressure to the palate and interweaves the ripe fruit. This wine from Nierstein's Pettenthal comes across as enormously fresh and vibrant, taut and firmly wrought from the moment you first feel it through to the long finish, and it has an inspiringly clear structure. This is a great wine with a long life.
