The colouring is an enchanting, bright golden yellow. The 2018 Riesling Marienburg Erste Lage "Raffes" unfolds, revealing fresh notes of green apple, citrus, gooseberry and young apricot. The fruity core is accompanied by hints reminiscent of sage and the cool, stony tones of slate. Although these aspects seem somewhat restrained at present, one can already sense the depth and complexity that this wine will reveal as it matures.
On the tongue, this excitingly versatile Riesling unfolds a refined interplay of sweetness and acidity. It is a remarkably elegant wine full of juiciness and variation. A Riesling whose artfully fused aromas and textures harmonise wonderfully with spicy and sweet and spicy dishes.
Alternative to Christina Hilker's recommendations: Try a spicy red lentil soup. Or as a delicate main course, bresaola with lemon oil and fresh seafood. Finish with a crispy suckling pig with a touch of Riesling and sage.
