Wine information

The wine comes from the single vineyard Kirchenstück in Hohen-Sülzen. This vineyard was already mentioned before the Thirty Years' War, so it has been under vines for more than 400 years. The 150-metre slope with a gradient of 15 % is characterised by clayey, chalky stones that you can grind in your hand. This gives the vines a very good supply of nutrients, and the minerals from the highly calcareous subsoil are translated directly. In the ancient core lies H.O. Spanier's oldest vineyard, planted in the 1960s. The wines of the Kirchenstück were fermented spontaneously by hand after selection and harvesting and aged in single and double barrels.

Color

medium straw yellow

Nose

The 2021 Große Gewächs Kirchenstück in Hohen-Sülzen presents itself calm and relaxed with a deep-looking stoniness and a discreet white-fleshed fruit of apples and some white peach. On top is a scent of blossoms, mint and some bresaola. As with the other wines from H.O. Spanier, this wine does not have an expressive nose. It is rather a texture and structure wine.

Mouth

On the palate, the Riesling seems firm in its light tannin structure and flowing in its clear acidity at the same time. The fruit is still crisp with some mirabelle, Reineclaude, some dark berries and ripe lemon. The Church piece The finish stretches out enormously and, despite the tension in the acidity, remains on the relaxed, charming side. The salt in the finish is just as mouthwatering as the minerality. The Great Growth seems deep and complex, energetic, almost tonic.
