Wine information

Most of the vineyards on the edge of the Haard in the transition from the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest are oriented to the east. However, the Siebeldinger vineyard of the same name in the Queich valley is in the sunshine; because it is exposed to the south. The vineyard is situated at 160 to 250 metres and has a slope of 5 to 20 %. The Riesling stands, southwest oriented, on shell limestone soil from the Triassic. The wine was vinified after destemming and a 24-hour maceration period. After pre-clarification and natural sedimentation, fermentation followed in stainless steel and six months of ageing on the fine lees.

Nose

Almost unusual is the scent of nutmeg and rose that wafts over the glass of this grand cru. In the sunshine lies. But this slight confusion quickly subsides, and it becomes quite riesling-like. This is expressed in grapey as well as in yellow-fruity stone fruit and pineapple notes. But what always resonates here, and not too scarce, is a distinctive, almost smoky spice.

Mouth

This spiciness also characterizes the taste of this very ripe and yet clear and cool Großes Gewächs. Stone is revealed, as well as the phenolic of the long maceration and the associated salt. Many herbal notes and something citrus weave through the wine along with the corresponding acidity. The high chalk content of the soil always provides here - and so also in 2017 - a vibrant and demanding, dark and complex minerality and liveliness until the long finish. Here, the »Groß" in the Großes Gewächs definitely has its justification.
