The Frauenberg in the southern Wonnegau lies at 190 - 200m above sea level with a slope of around 40%. North of Hohen-Sülzen in the Flörsheim district lies the historically significant site, which was already mentioned in a document in 1290 with the name "an frauwenhalten" and was originally owned by a nunnery. Its overlay consists of limestone gravel, the subsoil is a pure, solid limestone base. Despite its southern exposure, the exposed location of the Frauenberg always brings cool winds. There, the vines are deeply rooted in the hard, mineral-rich soil, which makes them self-sufficient and allows for long, healthy growing seasons even in extreme years. The wines of the Frauenberg are fermented spontaneously by hand after strict selection and aged in wooden barrels.

Color:

Brilliant, light straw yellow with brilliant reflexes and fine silver rim.

Nose:

The 2019 Frauenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs from Battenfeld Spanier is a wine of pure understatement: "Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste." Nothing is touted here, nothing is loud or even proclaimed. Almost monolithic in itself, it tends rather to quote, rather than being aromatically final about anything. Citrus, and wet limestone are reminiscent of wet blackboard chalk, notes of apricot kernels and apple peel are brightened by fresh aromas like borage and cucumber peel. All this is summed up by distinctive dark aromatics of berry fruits, light tobacco, black cardamom and smoky notes in the overtone range.

Mouth:

Clear on the nose, it is precise and disciplined. As with many 2019 wines, its piquant acidic nerve initially makes it seem sinewy and enormously taut on the nose, until it opens up on the palate. Pulsating, it builds increasing pressure, knows no mercy and takes no hostages. The orchestral acidity remains the leitmotif of the Frauenberg, its entire structure is oriented towards it: extract, phenolic, minerality are choreographed by it, its dark aromatics with slightly smoky minerality give it a touch of audacity á la Steve McQueen. You can, of course, drink it now with high rapture, but you should put it away for at least three years. Or five, if you can manage it.

Food recommendations by Sebastian Bordthäuser:

  • Salad of plums and tomatoes with white pepper and shiso leaves
    (Vegetable & Vegetarian)
  • Lobster with its own bisque and oil of watercress
    (seafood)
  • Pork belly with miso and salty plums
    (meat)
