Wine information

Vintage

The 2017 vintage will go down in the history of this wine estate. For Olivier Humbrecht, it is one of the three best vintages since the foundation of the wine estate in 1959. However, this time frost and hail limited the yield to less than 20 hl/ha on average. After an early budbreak, two cold spells with sub-zero temperatures on April 21 and 22 exposed even those areas that were more sheltered to frost. An unusually freezing easterly wind froze vines in vineyards like the Herrenweg de Turckheim, which never froze to death in the 60 years Olivier's father has been involved. A hailstorm in the Brand vineyard fortunately remained without major consequences. Midsummer was hot, August milder, and the harvest started on August 29 with Pinot Gris Roche Roulée, followed by terroirs like Rotenberg, Heimbourg, Goldert ... A little rain on September 2 accelerated the ripening. The Rieslings were harvested from 11 September and the harvest finished with Rangen, Hengst and Clos Jebsal on 26 September. Only in Clos Jebsal were there minor signs of botrytis.

Vineyard

Windsbuhl was an imperial possession of the Habsburgs until the end of the Thirty Years' War. Later, it belonged to the King of France, then to the Duke of Württemberg, until it was expropriated and sold during the French Revolution. In 1987, Humbrecht acquired the 6.5 hectare Clos, and the first Windsbuhl wines were produced in 1988. The shell limestone soil is stony and has only a thin overlay. The finest-grained clay minerals contained there get into the plant. The high percentage of pebbles and coarser elements leads to a good heat storage, so that the altitude of 300 to 375 meters and the proximity of the Vosges, which brings a lot of freshness, can be compensated. It is a terroir where the grapes from the 45-year-old vines can ripen slowly. In 2017, these grapes were among the last to be harvested by the winery.

Fermentation

The wine has 5.8 g/l residual sugar with 4.8 g acidity and 3.0 pH. Fermentation took place in several phases over a period of about 16 months. The harvest quantity was 45 hl/ha.

Nose

Aromatically, the 2017 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl to the rather restrained representatives. Shy and withdrawn, it reveals some aromas of fallen pome fruit, some citrus fruits as well as some curry. The nose is clear, almost linear, mineral and precise.

Mouth

Characterized by limestone, a late ripeness and a slow fermentation, the wine also still seems a little shy on the palate. But again, what precision in the interplay of light tannin, ripe, clear and even slightly attacking acidity, deep minerality and bright fruit! The Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is compact and elegant at the same time, like a 400-meter runner in training who still has some time before his big performance. As far as potential is concerned, we are talking about 20 years for sure - long distance. With a little air, the wine becomes juicier, saltier and chalkier, never losing the precision already mentioned. Great!
