The rising basalt has lifted and pushed aside the layers of rock above it, so that basalt, shell limestone, Keuper and mottled sandstone are not on top of each other here, but lie directly next to each other in a very small space. A hint of sloe, coriander seed and a little pencil resonate.

Info

The Odinstal vineyard is a small, five-hectare enclave high above Wachenheim an der Weinstraße. It is located directly on the Pechsteinkopf, a small basalt volcano that erupted here 30 million years ago during the formation of the Upper Rhine Graben. The rising basalt has lifted the rock layers above it and pushed them aside, so that basalt, shell limestone, Keuper and mottled sandstone do not lie on top of each other here, but directly next to each other in a very small space.

The basalt site is characterized by the Pechsteinkopf, a volcanic crater that you can visit up there. The soil is rich and full of nutrients. Temperatures are moderate and slow throughout the year. Aromatically, this goes into rather exotic fruits as well as smoky and salty nuances.

Color

Sparkling straw yellow, bright reflections

Nose

The nose evokes dark, nocturnal associations. The basalt comes to the best advantage. It seems smoky. Above all, however, it is very profound and restrained. A delicate, light note of pome fruit unfolds only slowly. A hint of sloe, coriander seed and a little pencil resonate. Tangerine skin and some lime zest can also be detected. With increasing oxygenation a mealy apple spreads more and the dark, mysterious impression deepens.

Palate

On the palate, it is initially characterized by an aromatic clarity. In contrast, there is a creaminess that spreads across the palate. However, with a delicate sugar tail, this suits the Palatinate very well. It's quite unique and certainly owed to the turbulent 2018 vintage. The aromas of the nose come to the fore again in a similar way. In the reverberation, it then seems dark again and interspersed with lots of ripe pear. Extremely tasty.
