The Odinstal vineyard is a small enclave occupying five hectares high above Wachenheim an der WeinstraÃe. Due to the Rhine rift valley, in the Palatinate, a wide variety of rock forms are generally found on the surface in a very small space. At Odinstal, this phenomenon is so concentrated that four primary rocks are found here in direct proximity to each other - basalt, shell limestone, Keuper and mottled sandstone. Andreas Schumann and his team want to exploit precisely this diversity and clearly highlight the differences.
In contrast to the other Riesling bottlings, the 120 N.N. is clearly below the tree line. There, it is in direct proximity to other producers on "normal" Palatinate terroir. The vineyard was planted in the 1980ies, and the result in the bottle is much easier to classify sensorially in the Palatinate region than the wines from 350 meters above sea level.
Sparkling golden yellow
Intensive and concentrated, the Riesling 120 N.N. flows from the glass. It spreads aromatically on all sides, on the one hand in the direction of quince compote, fully ripe apricots, kaffir lime leaves and lime zest. On the other, a turmeric and curry nose develops in the glass. A little parsley and lemongrass add another component. Lush and exciting, this Riesling triggers enthusiasm before the first sip due to this diversity. A mixture of rustic and cosmopolitan.
The enthusiasm sparked on the nose is surpassed on the palate. The rich, concentrated fruit evokes an almost perfect drinking experience pure drinking flow and an almost endless finish. The aromatic diversity of the nose is shown to its best advantage and is superbly drawn out by cool, lean attributes. The fruit is wonderfully in balance with the acid structure.
