Wine information
The Pinot Blanc Rappenberg Has moved up into the layer category. In 2018 it was still called Landwein Baden White. It comes from a steep southwest location in Kappelwindeck with weathered red mineral-rich granite. As always, here was worked with an old basket press and with spontaneous fermentation. The wine was fermented in used 500 tonneau. The Pinot Blanc was bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur.
Color
medium straw yellow
Nose
The Rappenberg 2019 still appears restrained and shy on the nose. Therefore, a carafe is recommended, in which the Pinot Blanc then shows first signs of a bright and penetrating aroma. Besides quite little fruit - crisp green pears and apples meet green and yellow citrus fruits - it is rather a certain stoniness that is noticeable here, furthermore a mixture of herbs with chervil in combination with pickled green olives.
Palate
On the palate, this ripe but green aroma remains present and combines with the very light caramel from the Tonneau. This is a decidedly taut Pinot Blanc with a perfectly effective discreet use of wood, almost a singular event within the tradition of Baden, where this variety consistently tends to be too ripe and too lush. Here one senses a sinewy power and tension in the wine, grip on the palate and the lively acidity, which has a mineral effect on the finish and combines with an iodine component to create a certain sharpness.
