Color
In a rich shining golden yellow the wine shows itself clear and shiny in the glass.
Nose
Promising discreet opulence, the wine presents itself on the nose with pronounced yellow fruit and exoticism. The scent of ripe honeydew melon gets a gauzy coating of butterscotch toffee on the one hand, and an invigorating twist of tangerine zest and lemongrass on the other. With subtle notes of dried banana chips and fresh fig, the Palatine is more on the fruity side than the entirely sparse side, and is supportively grounded by flavors of currant bush, pipe tobacco, and lightly roasted peanut.
Palate
On the palate, one gets to feel the Rebholz family's experience in handling the Chardonnay grape joyfully and without resistance. The 2016 Chardonnay impresses with body tension and an unwavering sense of balance. Neither too lean, nor too plump, and with an extremely attentive touch to the use of the wood barrel. It appears broad-shouldered and carried by sheer tropical fruit, but is then supported by discreet bitterness paired with astral acidity. Delicately toasty it reverberates and rises like white smoke.
Habemus Chardonnay!
