Wine

Pranzegg, I.E.A. Quirein 2013, Mitterberg IGT, 12,5 %

Wine information

The Lagrein vines are planted in a north-westerly orientation, half in pergola, half in so-called Guyot. The Lagrein was left on the mash for six weeks with 90 % of stems and stalks. After twelve months on the fine lees in large used wood and after racking, the Quirein was allowed to mature for another eleven months in large wood. It was then bottled without filtration and fining with a small amount of sulphur added.

Color

purple with dark core and cherry red rim

Nose

Gojer's 2013 Lagrein Quirein opens with concentrated dark fruit of blackberry, cassis and ripe plum. Quickly, however, lighter and more acidic flavors of cranberry and sour cherry blend in, combining with light balsamic notes, dry wood, some ink, violets and a hint of cinnamon. No question, after this prelude one wants more.

Palate

On the palate, the tension between juicy, ripe dark fruit and the rather acidic red fruit continues. The Lagrein is actually not a tannin accentuating variety, but with Martin Gojer it has a distinctive, albeit fine-grained tannin structure. A little air is good for the still young Lagrein. With it, it fans out, develops a pleasant complexity in the fruit and lets the acidity dance.

Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt:

  • Duck breast with plums
    (poultry, duck, stone fruit)
  • Oven braised kid wrapped in lardo with herbs
(meat, lamb, milk kid, spicy vegetables)
  • Bound barley with beetroot and grey kaz (vegetarian)
(Vegetables & Vegetarian, Cereals, Beetroot, Vegetarian dishes)
