The use of wood is obvious but skilfully applied, providing an inviting creaminess as well as the subtle notes of liquid butter, lightly toasted almonds and vanilla croissants, before the citrus fruits take the lead again on the finish and combine with an incisive saltiness. At a certain opulence, perhaps, but it is actually the acidity and citrus freshness that are at the forefront here, giving the Pouilly-Vinzelles a pleasant sharpness and cut.

Wine information

Les Quarts is undoubtedly one of the best terroirs in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The vineyard, which is fantastically located, faces east and has 48 to 80-year-old Chardonnay vines on siliceous and above all ferruginous clay and Jurassic limestone soil. Of the 52 hectares of the site, two hectares belong to the Bret brothers, who work 1.5 hectares of it by horseback. The slope has been certified biodynamic since 2006. The grapes were harvested by hand on September 13, 2019. This was followed by whole cluster pressing and then spontaneous fermentation. The Chardonnay was then aged for 17 months, first in used barrels and then in neutral cuves after the blend. A 100 %ige malolactic fermentation took place. The wine was only lightly sulphured before bottling. The total sulphur is 20 mg/l. The wine has a pH value of 3.20.

Nose

The 2019he Les Quarts is a wonderful Burgundy, which finds a balance between southern fullness and a cool nervousness. It is above all citrus notes that one feels here, above all grapefruits and lemons including their abrasion, in addition yellow and green apple. There is also a little verbena, chamomile, crushed stone and a hint of almond slivers.

Palate

On the palate, the Chardonnay is juicy and fresh, powerful and punchy. The 2019 "Les Quarts" has real power. Do you notice the southern origin? By a certain opulence, perhaps, but it's actually the acidity and citrus freshness that are at the forefront here, giving the Pouilly-Vinzelles a pleasant sharpness and cutiness. The use of wood is obvious but expertly deployed, providing an inviting creaminess as well as subtle notes of liquid butter, lightly toasted almonds and vanilla croissants before the citrus takes the lead again on the finish, combining with an incisive saltiness. Drinkability is guaranteed here.
