In fact, however, it is the interplay of the aforementioned acidity, an energising minerality and the special texture due to the amphora ageing, which appears silky but also grippy. The Garnacha shows its freshest side here, even in a vintage like 2019, which was significantly warmer than 2018.

Wine information

The Planetes de Nin Vi naturel de Garnatxes en Àmfora comes from the east-facing vineyard Finca les Planetes, directly opposite the village of Porrera. Carles Ortiz planted Garnacha Negra and Cariñena there years ago and partly also took over old stocks, which also include Garnacha Peluda, so that the vines are between ten and more than 80 years old. They stand on different formations of Llicorella schist, some soils are harder, others more weathered. They hold varying levels of iron, silica and black clay. For this wine, only Garnacha from the younger plantings of the four-hectare site is used. The site has been farmed biodynamically since 2006. The grapes were destemmed before fermentation, but not pressed. Rather, the berries went into Spanish cellar amphorae of 700- and 1,000-liter capacity for seven months. The vintage received a light filling sulfur.

Nose

As always, this amphora-grown Priory the most open and supple wine of the red collection already in its youth. The Garnacha shows its freshest side here, and that too in a vintage like 2019, which was considerably warmer than 2018. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz have managed to make the wine smell light and easy. Violets and broom combine here with cherries, red currants and barberries, as well as ripe blackberries and some blackcurrant. The whole is rounded off by allspice and juniper, some undergrowth and burnt clay.

Mouth

On the palate, the red and black fruit forms the core of this wine, which is infused with fresh acidity. It is always important to remember that we are here in Priorat, in a hot year and with a grape variety that is not necessarily famous for a striking acidity and in which, due to the long maceration, no rape was also fermented. In fact, however, it is the interaction of the said acidity, an energizing minerality, and the special texture due to the amphora aging, which is silky, but also grippy. This variant of the Planetes seems as cuddly as a cat, tonic with vibrating liveliness and then again dark and slightly earthy with fine spiciness. That is very successful.
