Location information
On the noble soil of the Grand Cru Pfersigberg, where limestone and sandstone define the landscape, venerable 40-year-old vines thrive. They provide us with this incomparable drop with a modest quantity of 35 hl/ha.
Processing
Our winemakers decided to promote the philosophy of infusion instead of extraction for this wine. The spontaneous fermentation process took place in tanks with 35% whole grapes, after which the wine matured in barriques for 17 months. A malolactic acid reduction in the spring gave the final touch, with no fining.
Optics
The ruby hue of this noble drop tends towards violet, lightening slightly at the edges.
Scent
Affectionately known as "Grand P", this 2019 Pinot Noir proves to be an earthy wine of great complexity that unfolds best in a carafe. With increasing oxygenation, one picks up notes of dark blackberries, black cherries, cassis and elderberry. A blend of forest leaves, truffle, tobacco, dark earth and wood smoke rounds out the bouquet, which reveals itself with an urgency that is literally an invitation to dive in. One could easily succumb to it.
Taste
On the palate, it impresses with its powerful fruitiness and striking acidity and tannin structure, which give it a certain youthful freshness. It proves once again what outstanding Pinot Noirs Alsace can produce - wines that can easily compete with the great Burgundies. To savour it to the full in its youthful phase, sufficient aeration and decanting are recommended; even a longer prior opening does no harm. It is perfect as an accompaniment to aromatic and intense dishes.
Alternatives to the food recommendations
As an accompaniment, we recommend delicate chanterelles roasted in butter and garlic, pink roasted fillet of venison loin with cranberry and thyme jus, and juicy rib eye steak straight from the grill, served with a classic béarnaise and crispy roast potatoes.
