Wine information

Until now, this wine was known under the name Badger Mountain known. But it is no longer allowed to be called that, because the word reads like the name of a vineyard and that does not seem opportune for a Baden country wine. So the Mountain crossed out on the label, the Badgers but remained. Unlike the other wines, which are officially mostly made under the direction of Klaus Vorgrimmler, the Pinot Noir is a wine made by Maj Britt Vorgrimmler. The Vorgrimmlers' grapes come from the Tuniberg, a Jurassic limestone fault that folded up during the formation of the Upper Rhine Graben. On top of the Jurassic limestone lies a layer of loess of varying thickness. The grapes are harvested by hand, partially destemmed and slowly fermented. The wine matures for about 20 months in used barriques. Only at bottling time do the Vorgrimmlers add minimal amounts of sulphur to the wine, bringing it to 30 to 40 mg/l total sulphur. It is bottled without any additives and without fining, with only very coarse filtration.

Nose

Vorgrimmler's Pinot Noir 2018 is a wine that starts out clearly smelling of smoke and some flint, of tobacco and leather, undergrowth, ivy and some hung game. Later, there are notes of juniper and allspice, then increasingly of cherries, blackberries and cranberries, of some sloes and elderberries. On top of that are notes of violets and crushed rock, as well as a little wood. This is a very stylish start.

Palate

On the palate, the wine retains the mix of forest and undergrowth, animal notes, juniper and wood. But all this is further enhanced here by a crystal-clear acid structure and a fine-grained and at the same time striking tannin, which underlines the dark and serious impression of this wine. There is plenty of extract here, but also plenty of juice, a wonderful freshness and an animatingly tart note on the finish. A strong performance!
