The Lieu-dit Altenbourg is located in Kientzheim between 220 and 300m altitude meters at the foot of the slope of the Grand Cru site Furstentum above. The clay and limestone soils here have a higher overlay than in the Furstentum and are generally richer. The Altenbourg favours early and even ripening with good extraction and fullness.
The grapes for this Pinot Noir are harvested by hand, followed by the gentle pressing of the whole grapes with subsequent spontaneous fermentation with its own yeasts in large old wooden barrels. with subsequent maturation for eight to ten months.
Color
Transparent ruby red with delicate violet reflections.
Nose
The 2018 Altenbourg Pinot Noir oscillates between juicy red fruit and ethereal spice. Ripe cherries mingle with small wild raspberries, the fruit shows ripe yet fresh without any cooked aromatics. Mild spicy notes hover over it, reminiscent of an oriental bazaar allspice, cloves and sandalwood give it depth and complexity.
Mouth
On the nose, the Altenbourg Pinot Noir is super juicy with extract-rich, ripe fruit. Complemented by youthful tannins, it also manages the balancing act of extract-rich, ripe, dark fruit and piquant spice on the palate with a grippy feel. Flanked by the fine toasty aromas of barrel aging, it flows into the long, fruity warm finish.
