Information about the wine:
The remote Rotenberg site with west/north-west exposure is located near the Grand Cru Hengst and is characterised by a ravishing view of the Munster Valley and the Vosges. The vineyard, planted primarily with Pinot varieties and ripening late, has a poor red Olizocene limestone soil rich in iron. This soil type reduces the vitality of the vines, resulting in generally low yields. In times past, the vineyard was known for creating harmonious, rich and sweet wines. However, due to the natural concentration of the grapes, complex dry Pinot Gris wines have also developed in recent years.
Processing information:
In 2016, avoiding over-ripening was easier and it was easier to ferment with wild yeasts.
Color:
A pale and reserved golden yellow characterises this wine.
Aroma:
The smoky, malty and powerful character of the 2016 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is already revealed in the aroma. Beetroot, boxwood, pepper and roasted walnuts mingle with a fine butter note and a hint of vanilla. After a while of aeration, seductive notes of vineyard peach and acacia blossom dominate, perfectly blending into its earthy and malty structure.
Taste:
On the palate, the wine starts off strong, salty and makes its presence felt with vigour. The body is voluminous and powerful, but is balanced by the lovely fruit flavour and a charming sweetness that reminds of juniper and lavender in the finish. The long finish is cold and reminiscent of refreshing herbs. This wine presents a wealth of impressions and it remains exciting to see how it will develop in the coming years.
Alternatives to the food recommendations:
Try this wine with puff pastry tarts with morels and celery, finished with a sherry cream and pickled green walnuts. Another option would be quail stuffed with calf's brain on a cream of green peas and mint, accompanied by celery and a spicy-fruity cherry tomato chutney. Or what about breaded braised veal with wild herb dumplings, asparagus and a lemon gin jus?
