Nose
Popcorn, candied fruit, apricots, dates and candied lemon adorn the nose of Zind Humbrecht's 2001 Clos Saint Urban Rangen de Thann Pinot Gris Grand Cru with baroque regalia. Subtle spicy notes of light tobacco, leather and mild spices like mace and allspice and baked celery linger in the top notes. Montelimar nougat and nuts mingle with the impression of wet blackboard chalk. Layered and complex. Pinot gris on steroids - Spectacular!
Mouth
Viscous and spicy on the nose, the distinctive maturity is evident even before the cascade of fruit, which is remarkably modest on the palate. It balances the spicy and ripe notes with discreet residual sweetness and leaves the impression of masculine wine, which is characterized by the aromatics of spices or precious woods. Candied takes place more as a means to an end than as a primary gustatory argument. Bottle empty, fire brigade!
