The 2005 Pinot Gris from Clos Windsbuhl Vendanges Tardives shimmers in a rich golden hue, refined by delicate copper reflections. The nose is conquered by an intense sweetness, infused with enticing scents of honey, caramelised almonds, dried dates and orange marmalade.

On the palate, this remarkable fermented sweet wine is lush and sweet, accompanied by a strong minerality. One can clearly see that this wine is still in the early stages of its development, with a maturation potential that will last for many years to come.

Clos Windsbuhl is situated on a 16-acre ridge facing south and southeast and is home to a special microclimate, enhanced by the nutrient-poor limestone soil. Similar to the exceptional vintages of 2002 and 1994, the grapes achieved impeccable ripeness and acid balance in 2005. Just before harvest, noble rot transformed the berries into smaller, sweeter and more intense fruit.

Already now the wine unfolds its impressive aromatic potential with notes of honey, apricot and wax and the characteristic Windsbuhl minerals. The palate, however, is still reserved and hides its enormous sweetness. But one can already see that this harmonious Vendage Tardive still has plenty of room for further development and has extraordinary storage potential.

Culinary partners would be a terrine of quail studded with pistachios and coarsely chopped almonds, or a balanced Salers cheese served with quince bread. For a sweet highlight, a curd soufflé with candied oranges would be an excellent finish. Alternatively, you could consider a foie gras on brioche or blue cheese with pear wedges. Equally delicious would be a braised pear in white wine with a dash of the same Pinot Gris.
