Marco de Bartoli has also taken a liking to the Zibbibo, which is not only sweet, but also dry like the Grillo, thus bringing out the best in the variety. The 2019 Pietranera from Marco de Bartoli is filigree and delicate on the nose and extremely sexy.

Tasting note from from 18.08.2020, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

The Pietranera comes from de Bartoli's second vineyard on Pantelleria, a volcanic island southwest of Sicily on the same latitude as Tunis. There, the Muscat d'Alexandrie is called Zibbibo and is usually vinified as dessert wine, until Marco de Bartoli started to vinify the Zibbibo dry in 1989. In the two north-facing Contrade Cufurà and Ghirlandaan, the old vines thrive in low single vine training for this profoundly mineral wine. Fermented in steel with subsequent six-month maturation on the fine lees.

Color

Bright yellow with silver tapered rim.

Nose

The 2019 Pietranera from Marco de Bartoli is filigree and delicate on the nose and extremely sexy. Grown on "the black stone" of the island, this Zibbibo smells like a huge bouquet of wild flowers. Lily of the valley, roses, broom and lilies are backed by orange blossom, lemon blossom and oleander. Floral funky and highly addictive!

Mouth

Marco de Bartoli is also very fond of the Zibbibo, which is not only sweet, but also dry like the Grillo, thus, bringing out the best of the variety. The volcanic tuff soils make it glide almost silkily over the tongue, so dance-like it flows over the palate. In its light-footed elegance, it impressively proves with its 12% what is possible in white wine. Fine-flavored and bone-dry, it defines new white wine standards for hot regions as well as for the Zibbibo itself.
