Wine information

This Mencía comes from vineyards in the San Lorenzo del Bierzo district planted between 1901 and 1910, together with small portions of white Doña Blanca. These are La Calleja , Lombano , Las Tablas and El Corzo . All the vines were raised as bush vines in Gobelet and are farmed organically. They are mainly planted in clay soils at up to 600 metres with proportions of lime and iron. The grapes were harvested into small boxes and destemmed. The alcoholic fermentation took place spontaneously without temperature control. The wine was left on the skins for a fortnight and pumped over twice a day. The wine was then aged for twelve months in new and used French oak tonneaux.

dark purple

The Pico Tuertonamed after one of the highest elevations near San Lorenzo del Bierzo, is a Mencía as juicy as it is intense and complex. It opens with notes of plums, blackberries and pomegranate juice. It then moves on to some sweet plumcake tobacco, liquorice and some raw meat and crushed stone. The wine appears concentrated and fresh on the nose.

On the palate, the wine shows power and warmth on the one hand and a deep and electrifying minerality on the other. The dark red to black fruit appears ripe and has crisp elements. The Mencía presents itself fine-grained in structure with elegance and grip, with a fine acidity and an impressive length. The interplay of warm fruit and alcohol as well as the stony and cool mineral aspects is particularly striking, and the wine already offers this with considerable potential.
