Nose
2018 Piandorino is the entry drug into the Sangiovese world of Jan Erbach. At first it seems dark, profound and sublime. For an entry-level wine, it seems very serious. On the nose, dark wild berries meet plums and black cherries. The cherry dominates this, joined now and then by underbrush, warm leather and spice. Also a little chocolate abrasion can be recognized.
Palate
The Piandorino comes across as racy, as is to be expected from its variety, and much lighter on the palate than the nose suggests. The aromas of the nose are all reflected, but it seems bloodier and fresher. This definitely has tannin and structure, but is far from a concentrated wine. We're looking at more of a Pinot Noir among the Sangiovese. Enormously juicy and stimulating to much drinking flow.
