Information about the terroir

All grapes are grown in the VDP.Große Lage IM SONNENSCHEIN. While most of the Palatinate vineyards along the Haardtrand, the transition from the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest, were formed as eastern slopes by the Rhine rift running from south to north, there are also southern slopes in the Queichtal leading out of the Palatinate Forest into the Rhine Valley. The Siebeldingen "summer side" has the site designation "Im Sonnenschein". The plots in this location are 180 to 225 m above sea level, have a slope gradient of 5 to 20 % and are situated as south-western slopes east of the "German Wine Route". Due to the subsidence and faults of the Rhine Graben and the strong uplift of the Palatinate Forest, very old and otherwise very low-lying geological formations come to light in the area around Siebeldingen. The Pinot Noir vines grow on shell limestone soil, which was formed during the Triassic period 240 million years ago. The soil consists of "limestone that contains shells or is built up from shells". This is why fossils of marine creatures are still often found in the soil.

Information on the expansion

The healthy and ripe grapes were the perfect starting point for this red wine. After the selective hand harvest, the grapes were de-stemmed and kept cool in the red wine fermentation tanks for just under a week and repeatedly rolled over. This "cold maceration" is intended to create as many late Burgundy and site-typical aromas as possible even before fermentation. In the subsequent mash fermentation of about one week, the mash cake was also pierced and submerged. The wine was pressed after three weeks of contact with the mash. Before the barrel storage, a racking of the coarse yeast took place. New and used barrique barrels made of French and Palatinate oak were used for the two-year ageing in wood. For quality reasons, the wine was neither fined nor filtered. Therefore, a fine deposit may well occur.

Color

Muted garnet red with delicate lightening towards the rim.

Nose

The 2019 Pinot Noir "R" from Muschelkalk beguiles on the nose with a juicy and sweet-sounding fruit reminiscent of black cherries, cassis, wild berries and wild berry jam. The fruity aroma is accompanied by chocolatey hints and the scent of sweet, oriental spices, such as cinnamon, clove, cardamom and vanilla. Herbs such as thyme and rosemary give the exciting and multi-faceted fragrance an additional fresh and Mediterranean touch. Due to its youthfulness, the wood spice is still present, this is encased by a compact mineral note.

Palate

On the palate, it appears mineral, fresh, Burgundian and extremely elegant, the fine wood spice is still relatively intense in the foreground, but will integrate wonderfully with further maturity from experience. Even in its youthful stage, it has a very nice drinking flow, which is due to its cool, mineral orientation.

But one should not underestimate its development potential, there is still more to come! So buy it and put it away, and for the moment's enjoyment, fall back on more mature vintages.

If you want to enjoy it at this stage, you should decant it and serve it slightly chilled in a large Burgundy glass.
