Information about the terroir
Due to the subsidence and the faults of the Rhine Graben as well as the strong uplift of the Palatinate Forest, one finds very different soil conditions in the area around Siebeldingen. From very old and normally quite deep geological formations, such as Rotliegendes, Buntsandstein or Muschelkalk, to quite "young" soils such as slope gravel or loess. These Chardonnay vines grow on loess and shell limestone soils in and around Siebeldingen. Loess was blown in as very fine dust and collected, in layers of varying thickness, in depressions. This happened until the last ice age, which ended 10,000 years ago. Loess is an ochre-yellow coloured, very calcareous silt.
Information on the expansion
The grapes were harvested by hand, destemmed, crushed and gently juiced after a 24-hour maceration period. After pre-clarification by means of natural sedimentation, fermentation took place in predominantly new barrique barrels made of French and Palatinate oak. After 9 months of storage and maturation in the barrel on the full lees, racking and bottling took place in July 2021.
Color
Sparkling golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Chardonnay "R" is a complex and expressive wine that presents itself somewhat closed when freshly opened. With the necessary oxygen, it unfolds its full splendour Yellow fruits, orange, pineapple, banana peel and mango, combine with light tobacco and vanilla, at the same time also with a fine primer aroma, as we love it in the great white Chardonnays from Burgundy.
Palate
On the tongue, it fascinates with freshness, salty notes, lots of minerality and juicy fruit. It challenges the palate in a pleasant way, especially with its fine phenolic and delicate vanilla notes in the long finish. Fruity components of mirabelle plum, peach and peach stone are pleasantly present. A wonderful Chardonnay that sets standards with its profound and multi-layered structure, a true masterpiece with a lot of facet and power. The cuisine that accompanies it should come up with the same intensity as itself.
If you want to enjoy it now, you should decant it and not drink it too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
