Oberbergener Pulverbuck Weisburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2018 – Franz Keller

Pulverbuck is one of the undisputed classics at Keller. It was the first vineyard to be developed as a single vineyard. The Pulverbuck, which is open to the wind, lies at 350-400 metres with a high proportion of active lime. It takes its name from the powdered loess that swirls up on the hilltop in summer, with volcanic rock underneath. The wines from the Pulverbuck are the stepping stone to the Grosses Gewächs and are always characterised by their unnerving acidity. The Weissburgunder was fermented spontaneously and matured in large wooden barrels and barriques.

Nose

The 2018 Weissburgunder Pulverbuck Erste Lage from Fritz Keller oscillates between noble reduction, discreet use of wood and filigree fruit. Pome fruits such as ripe pears mingle with roasted hazelnuts, above which floats the slightly flinty top note. Toffee, fruit jelly and delicate toasted notes outline the aroma, which visibly expands with increasing aeration. A clear case for the carafe and/or the expensive large glasses.

Mouth

Juice and power are stringently bundled on the palate and form the basis of its powerful body. The vibrant acidity and its saline character rapidly accelerate the pleasure and ensure a good length. The phenolic contours the wine with a fine bitterish note that frames the overall structure in a most attractive way. A precisely crafted Weissburgunder with the best ambitions and even better execution.
