Color
Liquid gold with light yellow reflections shows brightly clear and shiny.
Nose
Still reserved, almost shy on first appearance, this Riesling from the Saahs family needs time, air and an appropriately sized glass to reveal its true nature. Yellow mealy apple nestles gently against star fruit and physalis. Subtle ethereal notes of honeybush and green tea, as well as candied fennel seed, orange zest and bay leaf provide three-dimensionality and depth. Clear and precise, the bouquet already announces this wine is proud and full of character, yet far from boastful. Very likeable.
Palate
On the palate, the beauty of the Riesling grape is revealed in all its splendor and diversity. Fragrant, yet freed from kitsch, the 2013 Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd from Nikolaihof lives up to its name. As if carved in stone, yellow-fleshed fruit shows up driven and lovingly teased by a vitalizing acidic nerve and then reverberates stonily, sparsely and in recurring echoes for a long time. A true emerald of size and defined stature rather than weight and heaviness.
