In a rich shining golden yellow the wine shows itself clear and shiny in the glass.
Nose
Immediately after opening, this dog turns its back on you and impatience is punished by closedness. Good starting point for great wine.
This one needs air and patience, so off to the decanter.
First, germinating sprouts of garden cress, rocket and fenugreek open up from the compactness. This highly stimulating herbaceousness is complemented by an extensive walk through citrus groves. Lemon peel and lime juice, as well as orange blossom and leaf, together with fresh green apple, create a delicate fruit aroma. A "smelling wine" whose subtle grace demands time.
Palate
On the palate, the 2014 Riesling Steiner Hund of the Nikolaihof shines through the unrestricted embodiment of what makes brilliant Riesling greatness through restraint and sensitivity. Filigree instead of fulminant. Sparklingly flashing fruity peaks extend along the palate. Tense in itself, but full of balance, this Riesling ends thoughtfully but with a long recurring echo.
It is best to open one day before enjoying.
