Wine Description for Moric Reserve 2020 by Moric

Colour & Appearance
Dense, dark purple with bluish reflections and a delicate, natural cloudiness – a clear commitment to artisanal winemaking.
Nose
The nose is cool, precise and characterised by an almost Nordic austerity. Blackberry, elderberry and cassis form the dark fruit foundation, flanked by plum, rosehip and a hint of fig. Floral notes of violet and pansy lend elegance. Beneath lies an earthy, forest-like depth: damp forest floor, moss, undergrowth and freshly broken twigs. A touch of eucalyptus provides ethereal freshness.
Palate
On the palate, the promise of the nose is confirmed: dark, cool, dense – and yet of remarkable silkiness. The acidity is present but restrained, the tannins appear refined and almost unobtrusive. The dark berry fruit takes centre stage, herbaceous and fresh at once. For a region as warm as Burgenland, this tautness and elegance is extraordinary.
Finish
Medium length, clear and herbaceous-fresh. No excess, no showiness – the wine bids farewell as it presents itself: straightforward and honest.
Terroir & Origin
The wine hails from Burgenland, one of Austria’s most significant red wine regions. Roland Velich, the driving force behind Moric, ranks among the most consistent interpreters of Blaufränkisch – always with a focus on provenance, minerality and cool elegance rather than opulence.
Grape Variety & Winemaking
Pure Blaufränkisch (Lemberger), crafted with the aim of maximum transparency. The slight cloudiness points to minimalist cellar intervention – a wine that is not dressed up, but allowed to speak for itself.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with braised lamb shoulder, game ragout or a classic Wiener Tafelspitz. Also a convincing choice with aged hard cheese or mushroom dishes.
Special Characteristics
A wine that does not demand attention, but deserves it. Unpretentious, honest and precise – Blaufränkisch in its most coherent form.
