Wine information

The Lutzmannsburg Old Vines is a Blaufränkisch selection from the oldest and best vineyards. The Lutzmannsburg Plateau was formed on a prehistoric volcano on which different layers were deposited over time. Today one finds sediments of the Pannonian Sea in the form of calcareous sandstone, loam, sand and clay as well as deposits of volcanic origin. For the 2018 Lutzmannsburg Old Vines was selected from six parcels. The age of the vines is between 85 and 110 years. Around 20 % of the harvest was fermented as whole clusters with rape. After spontaneous introduction, fermentation lasted 23 to 28 days in open wooden vats. After very careful pressing into 500- and 600-litre barrels, the wine was left on full lees for eleven months, where spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place. The first drawing off took place after about one year. After that, the Blaufränkisch matured for another twelve months in 500-litre barrels. It was bottled at the end of September 2019. There was no fining, no filtration and only small additions of sulphites.

Nose

Herbs, elderberries, black cherries and mulberries in combination with a little tar, peat and wood are the markers that currently show the potential of this great wine. Burgenländers can assess. The wine's dark, multi-faceted aromas are seductive from the start. It fans out again after hours with plenty of air, showing more and more berry, stone and violet aromas.

Palate

The 2018s Lutzmannsburg Old Vines is a wine that already shows its full potential after four years, but also just that. It is one that should ideally mature for a decade, even though it is already so seductive now. It seems as dense and generous as it is balanced and precise. The Blaufränkisch oscillates between red and dark berries, wild herbs, stone and earthy notes, offering a lot of tannin, which, however, appears well-dosed, ripe and elegant. The wine clothes the palate with velvet and silk and prances on the tongue despite the depth and fullness it possesses. It's great now, but will become more complex and introspective with time. A wine for the next 20 years and more.
