Wine information

The Private label red is a wine based on the principle of the solera. The base wine is from the 2019 vintage , and this has been blended with wines from 2020, 2017, 2016 and 2014. The Private label red is to a certain extent a basic wine and at the same time the only red wine that does not consist of 100 % of Blaufränkisch. More than half of the blend is Rotburger , 25 % is Merlot, which was predominantly fermented with whole grapes, 10 % Pinot Noir, which was also fermented with whole grapes, and Blaufränkisch. To give the wine its finesse, the 2016 and 2014 batches are 100 % Blaufränkisch. Spontaneous fermentation took place in open vats for about three to four weeks, some with stems, spontaneous malolactic fermentation and ageing in wood from 500 to 4,000 litres. There was neither fining nor filtration, and only tiny amounts of SO2 added.

Nose

The Private label red behaves in the glass like all other wines by Roland Velich. You can enjoy it directly. But it gets more interesting when you give it a little air. Then a beautiful melange of dark fruit of blackberries, cherries, plums and some elderberries as well as earthiness, furthermore some wood spice, herbs and a cool impression of stone appears.

Palate

On the palate, it quickly becomes apparent that Roland Velich is not good at simple wines - at least not in the sense of low quality. And that's a good thing; because his simplest red is an excellently balanced Burgenland with substance and density on the palate, a lining but restrained tannin, with comparatively little rather tart and acidic fruit, with a lot of herbaceousness and stone. This is a wine with remarkable draw. And that's where it gets simple; because the Private label red likes to be drunk in large gulps.
