Color
Transparent ruby red with delicate violet reflections.
Nose
The red berry nose reminds of fully ripe raspberries, raspberry juice as well as blackberries and sour cherries. The clear, transparent fruit is balsamically underpinned by mild wood spice and fresh bread crust, brown bread, smoked bacon and dried meat. It radiates a fruit-driven, deep-dark warmth and promises ethereal, full-bodied Pinot enjoyment.
Mouth
The 2017 Monthelie 1er Cru "Sur la Velle" from Julien Altaber is gripping and firm on the palate. Learned from Derain, Julien knows how to bottle punchy Pinots with good internal tension and a decent punch on the palate. Polished tannins coat the ripe, yet leptosome fruit like a silky sheath wraps a cocoon. With fresh acidity and spicy extract, it combines archaic power with boisterous drinking.
