The Fürstentum vineyard extends over the two villages of Kientzheim and Sigolsheim and is located at 300-400 meters above sea level. Fürstentum is one of the quintessential sites for Alsatian Gewürztraminer and was first mentioned in a document in 1330. It benefits from the southern exposure, the soils are a conglomerate of marl, limestone and sandstone, with the marl commonly attributed strength and structure, the limestone freshness and the sandstone elegance and complexity.

The MFØ consists of 70% Gewürztraminer and 30% Pinot Gris. Grown on calcareous marl and tertiary gravel, the grapes were harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously in large oak barrels after three weeks on the skins. It was then moved to the steel tank where it underwent malolactic fermentation and was left on the fine lees until bottling. The MFØ was bottled unfiltered and unfined and without the addition of sulphur.

Color

Brilliant orange with a silky sheen and slight cloudiness.

Nose

The 2019 MFØ from Domaine Weinbach benefits immensely from timely aeration, so off into the decanter, upside down. Then it fans out its broad spectrum of aromas like a shimmering peacock's wheel. The naturally forward Gewürztraminer takes the lead without undercutting the Pinot Gris. The floral aspects go in the direction of cinnamon blossom, with the obligatory rose taking place more dried in the background. Small sour plums, orange peel and kumquats follow, all of this spicily grounded by fragrant bass of tobacco and mace. Roasted and salted hazelnuts, glazed yeast plait and a handful of dried fruit like apple rings and quince bread let the lips quickly purse towards the edge of the glass.

Mouth

There's no such thing as can't, as this bone-dry wine proves. Bone-dry Gewürztraminer with a bit of Pinot Gris that whistles like a guinea pig despite low acidity and the warm year. With a grippy feel, it is delicate on the palate with fine tannin and tremendous vibration. The aromas of the nose are self-evidently mirrored on the palate, plus the persistent tannin entry, reminiscent of green walnuts and the best Darjeeling. Mouth watering at a svelte 13.5% on dry finish, this Orange shows just how good this genre of wine can be when professionals are at work Bell clear and clean with epically long and above all cool finish. Drinking recommendation!
