Wine information
The wine comes from 40-year-old vines with 10,000 density planting in the Climat Clos du Roy in Chenôve in the Marsannay appellation. The vineyard faces east and is in organic farming with a subsoil of red stony clay and a sandy soil on Comblanchien limestone. Also found here are grèzes litées, sandy and gravelly rubble. After destemming, cool pre-fermentation and spontaneous fermentation, the wine is aged slowly on the fine lees for 16 months in 228-litre barriques with a new wood content of 20 to 30 %.
Color
intense, almost opaque ruby red
Nose
After decanting, the bouquet reveals a typical, even classic, aroma. Clos du Roy ethereal and balsamic at the same time, masculine, cool and stony, earthy with some meat extract as well as a lot of cool dark and crisp berry fruit such as cassis as well as a hint of wood and top notes of mint and eucalyptus.
Palate
Also on the palate, the Marsannay Cool and chalky, earthy and spicy with powerful acidity and firm tannins. Forest fruit, sour cherry and cassis set the tone here, along with some undergrowth. The Clos du Roy is not a flatterer, but it is extremely precise, clear and straightforward with a subtle enigmatic charm.
