Location and soil

Mazzon, called "Mason" by us to avoid confusion with the larger site above Neumarkt. Four hectares of this unique site are planted with Pinot Nero - a south-facing plateau at 400 to 450 metres above sea level, sunny and constantly exposed to the wind. Ideal conditions for the tightly berried Pinot grapes. The soil is sandy loam and interspersed with various stones - dolomite, porphyry, gneiss and granite - ranging from small grains to fist-sized stones.

Expansion

Each batch from the different parcels was pressed separately. The maceration took place in wooden vats, spontaneously with the grape's own yeasts. Maceration lasted two weeks, with the marc cake being dipped once a day. The 16-month wooden barrel ageing took place in barriques, with only 20 % of new wood and the wine remaining on the fine lees for the entire time. Only then were the individual parcels blended, selecting the best barrels from the highest parcel with the oldest vines for the Mason.

Color

Medium, sparkling ruby red.

Nose

The 2019 Mason presents itself with herbaceous aromas on the nose, lovage, chervil and mint show up in the attack. The whole is accompanied by a fine cinnamon and pepper note and a hint of wood smoke. With enough oxygen, fine fruity notes of sour cherries and small dark berries join in. An animating minerality hovers over everything.

Palate

On the palate, it is extremely elegant, fresh and animating. The fine, sweet fruit of cherries and berries emerges intensely here and enlivens the palate in combination with a fresh acidity. A lively wine that dances on the palate. Vegan, vegetarian preparations and also fish suit it very well.
