Tasting note from from 26.01.2022, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Since Jean-Guillaume and Jean-Philippe Bret took over the domaine, founded by their paternal grandfather in 1947, in 2000, the winery has gone from strength to strength, which is impressively confirmed by the many praises in the international wine press. The Bret brothers switched directly to organic and biodynamic cultivation, have been fully certified organic since 2006 and were able to take over five more hectares of vineyards in various locations, all of which were already certified organic.

The Mâcon-Vinzelles Le Clos de Grand Pere comes from the only 1.1 hectare site west of Vinzelles of 35 to 110 year old Chardonnay vines. Planted at a cane density of 8000/ha on clay and limestone soils, they are planted in a purely easterly orientation on the lower part of the slope at 200 metres above sea level. The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously to 90% in tanks and to 10% in used wood before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with 45mg of SO2 added after undergoing malolactic fermentation.

Color

Pale yellow with bright reflections and green shimmer.

Nose

The 2020 Mâcon-Vinzelles "Le Clos de Grand Pere" from Domaine de la Soufrandière has a vital, invigorating appearance on the nose. Its immediate response oscillates between ripe yellow fruit and distinctive green vegetal aromas. Ripe mirabelles as well as small, yellow plump pears mingle with garden herbs of chervil, burnet and some verveine. Above this floats a sublime nose of popcorn and restrained reduction reminiscent of wet flint.

Mouth

With a super juicy entry, good tension and persistent vibration, it is also immediately accessible on the palate with a jovial nature. The expansive fruit paves the way for its engaging and mouth-filling appearance without pretending to be familiar. Everything is in the right place with a creamy melt, underneath pulsates the bass of old vines that give it its rich extract. The acidity is finely integrated and combines all this into a cohesive appearance. Puristically clear with a persistent finish.
